KOSENKO IVAN SEMENOVYCH

- Honorary professor of Uman state pedagogical university named after Pavlo Tychyna.
He was born on December 3, 1940 in Krestytyleve, Chornobai district, Cherkasy region.
In 1970 he graduated from Uman agricultural institute, the faculty of agronomy. After that he entered at the pedagogical faculty, Ukrainian Agricultural Academy (1971). In 1986 he defended the thesis and got a scientific degree - candidate of science (biology). In 1994 he became a senior researcher in botany. In November, 2002 he successfully defended the dissertation and got the degree of doctor of science in biology.
Since 1980 he has been working as a director of Uman State dendrological park "Sofiyivka", NAS of Ukraine. He is an expert in plant introduction, phytosozoology and landscape gardening. He manages all restoration work of some parts of the park according to the plans (1796-1802) of the first architect L. Metzel.
He is the author of 135 scientific publications, including 12 monographs. He has two inventor's certificates. According to the President's decree of December 7, 2000 he was awarded the order "For merits" of the third category.
On the basis of the Kosenko's monograph Sofiyivka,
pages 'History' and 'Excursion' of this site have been created.

In this site, as well as in the monograph of I. S. Kosenko the photos of Volodymyr Demkov and Halyna
Sivko, well-known photo-artists in Umanschyna, were used. Their compositions
fix the moments, which help preserve the pearl of Ukraine in the primeval state.
Their works are unique and they hand them to the next generations through the
art of photographing; they also make a great contribution to providing knowledge
of landscape gardening and the history of Uman.
H. Sivko and V. Demkov took part in numerous
exhibitions, printed their photos in newspapers and magazines
of Ukraine. The presented photos reveal the theme of natural
and artificial beauty of a native land.

The park, as a scientific institution of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, is engaged in researches of connatural and cultural flora of austral Forest-steppe of Ukraine, introduction and acclimatation of plants in the region. The team of scientists of the park issued the catalogue of plants with the total amount 1994 taxons, in which 25 taxons of hazels, 24 beeches, 41 fir-trees, 44 junipers, 100 lianas, 320 roses, 57 rhododendrons and 98 flower plants - totally 1220 trees and bushes and 774 herbaceous plants.

| The beauty of the park was sung by a lot of poets, but the poem of the Polish poet S. Trembecki occupies an especial place. Written in 1811, it is the park guide book in verses.
